The Lesser of Two Evils
Navigating Political Divides with Faith and Grace
Understanding the Political Tension
Political topics like immigration, sexuality, reproductive rights, and international conflicts often create discomfort and division among us. These issues are shaping conversations across America, especially during election seasons. Christians find themselves split on these matters, leading to confusion and tension within the body of Christ.
Seeing the World Differently
Just as people saw different colors in the infamous "gold dress" debate, we see political issues through different lenses. Both Democrats and Republicans claim that if Jesus were here, He would support their views. However, pursuing a righteous end through unrighteous means dishonors God. Jesus addressed this in Mark 3:23, emphasizing that a kingdom divided against itself cannot stand.
Jesus' Radical Allegiance
In Mark 3:31-35, Jesus redefined family by stating that anyone who does God's will is His family. This challenges our political allegiances, urging us to prioritize our loyalty to God over any political party. Jesus' allegiance was not tied to titles or positions but to God's will.
Biblical Critique of Political Parties
Both political parties claim to align with biblical values, but neither has a monopoly on righteousness. Republicans emphasize the sanctity of life, family values, and religious freedom, while Democrats focus on caring for the poor, justice, and environmental stewardship. However, both fall short in different areas.
Immigration and the Republican Party
Leviticus 19:33-34 and Deuteronomy 27:19 highlight God's heart for treating foreigners with justice and love. The current approach to immigration often falls short of these biblical principles, reminding us to align our perspectives with God's word.
Sanctity of Life and the Democratic Party
Jeremiah 1:5 and Psalm 139:13-14 affirm that God is the giver of life, valuing individuals from conception. The use of abortion as birth control should break our hearts as followers of Jesus. However, we must also show compassion and support for women facing difficult decisions.
The Lesser of Two Evils
Choosing the lesser of two evils still means choosing evil. Both political parties are like contaminated glasses of water—neither is pure. We must seek unity in what matters most, offer freedom where opinions differ, and show love in all things.
Fighting the Good Fight
Paul's advice to Timothy in 1 Timothy 6:12 is to fight the good fight for the true faith and hold tightly to eternal life. Our primary allegiance should be to the gospel, not political ideologies. The moral decay in our nation cannot be solved through a presidential vote but through our unwavering commitment to God.
How to Vote with Confidence
1. Am I Compromising My Values?
- Consider biblical values like the sanctity of life, care for the poor, family values, justice, and religious freedom.
2. Am I Suppressing My Convictions?
- Recognize that personal convictions differ and are intimately connected to who we are as individuals created in God's image.
3. Am I Violating My Conscience?
- Don't let external pressure cause you to sin against your conscience. Follow what you believe is right before God.

Questions of reflection
As we navigate this election season, let's remember that our ultimate allegiance is to God. Here are some questions to reflect on this week:
- Are my political views aligned with biblical values?
- Am I allowing my political allegiance to overshadow my commitment to God?
- How can I show love and respect to those with differing political views?
Challenge yourself to engage in conversations with grace and humility, prioritizing unity in Christ over political divisions. Let's be a church that reflects God's love and truth in all we do.
